SWIS Peer Leader

This volunteer opportunity is offered through our SWIS program and is a great way for high school students to get involved and make a positive impact!

Peer Leader summary of eligibility

  • The Peer Leaders are high school students (Canadian and/or long-time immigrants) who are interested in acquiring volunteer experience and in assisting newcomer students at their school.
  • The Peer Leaders are trained by SWIS staff to prepare them with the skills they will need to best help the students they are matched with.

Peer Leader summary of duties

  • The Peer Leader will be matched with a student who is new to Canada and their school. The Peer Leader will assist the new student in learning about school culture, staff and programs.
  • There is no set time requirement regarding Peer Leaders working with the student they are matched with and SWIS asks peer leaders to use their judgment regarding when assistance is needed.

Peer Leader summary of outcomes

  • The Peer Leader will assist the student they are matched with in settling well into their new school and community.
  • The Peer Leader will receive an official certificate from the ECNWC recognizing their work with volunteering for the ECNWC.
